The opossum is the only marsupial in North America. Like other marsupials, female opossum have a pouch on their underside where young develop and nurse. Adult opossum are gray to white in color and are the size of an average house cat. Opossum are opportunistic eaters, and will eat anything from meat to plants, seeds, garbage, pet food, bird eggs, and voles to name a few.
Signs of their presence:
Visual, opossum are nocturnal and are rarely seen during the day.
Noise, opossum hiss and growl when threatened.
Damage
Opossum commonly den in garages, sheds, and barns. They commonly raid chicken coops, pet food, and bird feeders.
There are parasites in the fecal matter of opossum that is harmful to horses called equine protozoal myelitis. It effects the central nervous system and can cause lameness. It is passed through infected water or feed.
