Chipmunks, are a small squirrel like mammal that is very common in New York State. They range from 5 to 6 inches long and weigh approx. 3 ounces. In the wild, chipmunks live in the woods under piles of branchs, large rocks, or under tree roots. In urban and suburban settings chipmunks commonly den in flower gardens, stone walls, and under foundations. Chipmunks are opportunist feeders and will eat anything from plant bulbs, to nuts, seeds, birdseed, and berries.
Signs of their presence:
Visual, chipmunks are very active and are commonly seen running from burrows to feeding sites.
Sounds, chipmunks make a chirping sound to alert others of danger.
Chipmunk make holes that are approx 2 inches in diameter. They usually go straight down and don't leave any dirt mounds in front of.
Damage:
Chipmunks can undermine the strenght of structures such as patios, porchs, stairs or foundations by their constant burrowing.
Chipmunk can damage gardens, by eating bulbs, and garden shrubbery. They are also very capable of raiding bird feeders, and pet food dishes.
